If your foundation walls are bowing, buckling or are showing signs of inward movement, repair work is a necessity. These symptoms are a sign of weakening walls and potentially serious damage. Steel H-beams are installed from the inside of the basement. You secure steel beams in place to brace the bowing wall. It is important that this system is also tied into the frame work of the house to make sure it is set in place. This system braces the wall and prevents it from moving any more. It doesn’t straighten the wall back in place. Because these braces are straight steel beams they only will support where the wall is bowing at its worst.
What's the difference between I-beam and wide flange beam? ... An I-beam has tapered flanges with a narrower flange than most wide flange beams, making it a lighter building material. A wide flange beam, with wider flanges and web than the I-beam, can handle more weight, but this makes it heavier overall.
The primary advantage to the wide flange beam is that it allows builders to distribute a load over a wide area. This means that it can support a larger or wider structure with less risk of failure. They also weigh less than a square beam of the same size, but can support a larger load, making them more efficient.
In some cases we use a 1/4" angle iron lagged into the floor joist for light load repairs. On heavy load repair jobs we have seen this procedure fail. The floor joists will split where the lag bolts are installed. It is our experience that to add 2x8 or 2x10 blocking into the floor joists using Simpson fasteners or equivalent results in more structural strength with no damages. In addition, sistering the blocking in the floor joists spreads out the load. Home owners like this so they can finish the ceilings without obstacles. Joist sistering is adding an extra identical floor joist, it is a very effective way of adding the additional strength needed to hold up the blocking for the steel beam.
Steel Supports braces old block foundations. But in some cases you will have to rebuild the CMU wall with new CMU then have all the cells filled in with 1/2" rebar and grout. Once you get the wall built, roll on a waterproof membrane on the exterior side.
